Fox’s new ‘evil Alexa’ miniseries proves the Golden Age of TV is dead

Well, it was nice while it lasted.

For a while there, we really had something, didn’t we? What with Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, and even the more recent additions of Black Mirror and Star Trek: Discovery, it was starting to look like the Golden Age of TV was here to stay.

The trailer for Fox’s new “event series,” neXt, disabuses us of that tragically naive notion. The premise of the show? Looks like a barely disguised Alexa — dubbed “Iliza” — becomes self-aware and starts wrecking havoc.

“The fate of the world hanging on a bunch of nerds, most of whom didn’t get laid until their thirties,” the apparent main character, played by John Slattery, proclaims ominously at some F8-like conference. “Like most of you, by the looks of it.”

Car crashes and mysterious lines of computer code soon follow onscreen, along with the screamed lines of “give me back my files” and “the CPU workload just spiked.”

The show is set to premiere sometime in 2020, but you don’t need to wait that long to experience a smart speaker abusing your trust. On that front, your Amazon Echo’s already got you covered.
